Interview: 30 April 2012
Tell us about your music. How did you develop your sound?
I was around 14 when I was heavily drawn to guitar (already impressed by my peers who were in bands writing and playing their own material) I've always had an interest in writing, I'd write short stories on the computer before I began writing music. Things are forever resonating with me in terms of lyrical potential, if anyone ever came across the notes section on my ohone, they could think I was crazy. It's my idea's journal; I'm always jotting down little things that speak to me whether it be the way someone phrases a sentence or the odd thought (about ANYTHING) that comes to mind.

In terms of arranging guitar parts and melodies, I've found it's a process that comes most naturally when there are no expectations placed on the song before it's even been born. Over the years I've really worked hard on creating a bigger sound, I get excited by the idea of creating big orchestrations out of something that once started out so small. I started experimenting with my first backing band in 2010, and now I play most of my shows with them, having a band really breathes life into any live show.

You’re the Townsville winner of our Groovin' The Moo competition. What can GTM revellers expect from a Kate Martin live show?
Yes indeed, how exciting! The GTM revellers can expect a dynamic set featuring material from my first and latest album (Synthetic Shoes, Leather Boots & Hand Me My Bow And Arrow) including some new and unreleased songs.. as well as some awkward stage banter. GTM Townsville lands perfectly in the middle of my album tour so I'll be accompanied by my band which includes my very good friend from Sydney and ex middle East member Bree Tranter.

What are you most looking forward to about the Townsville GTM on May 6th? Who are you excited to see?
I'm mostly excited about being able to share the stage with such influential artists, it will be great playing to a home crowd under new and different circumstances. I'll definitely be catching sets by Big Scary, Matt Corby, City and Colour as well as Adrian Lux. This year's lineup is so strong and I'm over the moon to be a part of it!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
'Don't read your reviews'

What’s coming up for you in 2012?
After GTM, I'll be finishing of my tour in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Canberra. Then I'm making the migration to Melbourne in July, yay!

Australian music is…?
Ever-evolving!
